Meadowlark Dairy has long been a favorite gathering place for Bay Area locals and visitors. With roots that stretch back more than a century, what began as one of California’s earliest certified dairies has grown into a legendary ice cream destination enjoyed by people throughout the region. From its early days in Pleasanton to its evolution into a beloved drive-in and walk-up ice cream stop, Meadowlark Dairy has been woven into the fabric of the community. Families have made traditions here, friends have marked milestones with sweet treats, and newcomers have been introduced to a truly special local landmark. The magic of Meadowlark Dairy lies in its ability to honor its history while continuing to bring joy to every new generation. Today, it stands not only as a local favorite but also as a symbol of tradition, quality, and simple happiness. With its growing presence in the Tri Valley, there is even more to love about this timeless spot.
Meadowlark Dairy was founded in 1919 by Walter Briggs Sr. on a 153-acre farm where cows once grazed on land that is now known as Alviso Adobe Community Park. Over the years, Briggs built a successful and respected dairy that became an essential part of the local community. Eventually, stewardship of the business passed to the Takens family.
After World War II, Jannes and Janna Takens immigrated from Holland and settled in Pleasanton. Through years of dedication and hard work at Meadowlark Dairy, they earned the opportunity to purchase the business and carry its legacy forward.
In 1968, the dairy cows were relocated to Tracy, and a milk processing plant opened at 57 West Neal Street in Pleasanton. When the location launched as a drive-through in July of 1969, it quickly became a popular stop for Pleasanton residents.
Leadership transitioned again in the 1980s when Bruce Takens and his wife, Patti, took over operations. Today, Meadowlark Dairy continues to flourish under the care of Jesse Takens and his wife, Kelsey, keeping a multi-generational family tradition alive.
Meadowlark Dairy’s journey into ice cream began in the early 1980s, when Bruce and Patti Takens introduced soft-serve cones. What started as a simple addition soon became the heart of the business. The rich, creamy texture and perfectly balanced flavors made Meadowlark Dairy’s soft serve an instant favorite.
Today, guests can enjoy classic options like chocolate, vanilla, and swirl, along with rotating specialty flavors that often inspire loyal fans who eagerly await their return. Rather than following trends, Meadowlark Dairy keeps its menu intentionally simple, focusing on consistency and quality. Whether you visit through the nostalgic drive-through or order from the walk-up window beneath colorful umbrellas, the ice cream remains the star.
While Meadowlark Dairy has long been cherished locally, its reputation now extends far beyond the Tri-Valley. In 2023, Yelp ranked Meadowlark Dairy among the top 10 ice cream shops in the United States, placing it at number eight nationwide. This recognition reflected more than just delicious ice cream. It celebrated a business that has stayed true to its values for over a century.
Customers frequently praise the friendly service, efficient lines, shaded outdoor seating, and welcoming atmosphere. Reviews often highlight the perfect blend of nostalgic charm and exceptional quality, earning Meadowlark Dairy glowing ratings and a devoted following.
With more than 100 years of success, Meadowlark Dairy recently opened a second location in downtown Livermore at 2287 Second Street, California. This new shop allows even more people to enjoy Meadowlark's beloved flavors and warm service. The Livermore location offers indoor seating in a space that complements the classic drive-in experience of the Pleasanton store.
While the original drive-through remains an icon, the Livermore location introduces a fresh way to experience Meadowlark Dairy while maintaining the same sense of community and tradition. It marks an exciting new chapter for a business that has been part of Pleasanton and the Tri-Valley for generations.
